Introduction:
The Indian army is the second largest defence forces in the World. The Indian army was formed as early as 1895, during the British imperialism. After 2 years of independence, we got our first Indian Commander-in-chief Mr. K M Cariappa. The army headquarters located in New Delhi. Indian Armed Forces mainly divided into three sub-heads.
1. Indian Army Personnel
2. Indian Air Force Personnel
3. Indian Navy Personnel.
Indian Armed Forces also include Indian coast guard and paramilitary organizations (Assam Rifles, Special Frontier Force, Strategic Force Command, Integrated Defence Staff, Andaman and Nicobar Command). The president of India is the supreme of the Indian defence services. The Indian armed forces come under the management of Ministry of defence of India. Indian armed forces have been engaged in several wars like 1947’s Indo-Pak war, and 1965’s, 1971’s war, 1999’s Kargil war and own all of them.
Indian Army Career Options:
A Career in the defence forces as an officer has a place of dignity and respect. Probably this is the reason why the popularity graph of this career is always high. Armed forces offer excellent carer opportunity to the young candidates. It is a career which offers a privileged lifestyle and of course the honour to serve the nation. The first and foremost duty of armed forces is to protect the country and its countrymen from any outside or inside attacks. The armed forces work could be divided into two categories, the fighting forces, and supportive services.
Rank Hierarchy in Indian Armed Force:
1. In the Indian Navy, the highest rank is Admiral and the lowest rank is a Seaman.
2. In the Indian Army, the highest rank is General, and the lowest rank is of a Sepoy.
3. In the Indian Air Force, the highest rank is Air Chief Marshal and the lowest rank is of Aircraftsmen.
All of the three forces have following 3 rank divisions:
1. Commissioned Rank: Officers holding this rank are considered as the leader of the army whether it is a platoon, battalion, brigade, division or company. In other words, commission rank holders are the Group A officers. Field Marshal, Lieutenant General, Major General, General, are some of the examples of commissioned rank officers.
2. Junior-Commissioned rank: Junior commissioned rank holders are lower than the commissioned rank holders and considered as the Group B officcers. Subedar, Subedar Major are some of the examples of junior-commissioned rank officers.
3. Non-Commissioned Rank: When soldiers are promoted in Indian army are mostly considered as non-commissioned rank. The non-Commissioned rank holders are equivalent to corporals or sergents in the western armies. Havildar, Ddaffadar, Lance Naik are some of the examples of junior-commissioned rank officers.
Indian Army Career for graduates: –
1. CDS (Common Defence Service) Examination
The most popular exam to enter into the Indian armed force is CDS (Common Defence Service) which conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) twice a year. This exam is conducted to take admission to the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala, Air Force Academy (AFA) Hyderabad, Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai for men & women in Short Service Commission (SSC). Every Academy reserves some seats for NCC (National Cadet Corps) ‘c’ certificate holders.
Educational Qualification for IMA and OTA is – a degree from any recognized university or equivalent. For INA, Degree in Engineering from any recognized university/Institution. For AFA, a degree of a recognized university (with physics and mathematics at 10+2 level) or Bachelor of Engineering.
Eligibility:
Age limits, Sex, Marital Status: –
a. For IMA – unmarried male candidates must be between 18-25 years.
b. For INA – unmarried male candidates must be between 18-25 years.
c. For AFA – age must be between 20-24 years.
d. For OTA (SSC course for men) – unmarried male candidates must be between 18-25 years.
e. For OTA (SSC course women non-technical) – unmarried women, issueless widows who have not remarried and issueless divorcees (in possession of divorce documents) who have not remarried are eligible. And they must be between 18-25years.
Note: Candidate below 25 years of age must be unmarried. Marriage is not permitted during training. Married candidates above 25 years of age are eligible to apply but during the training period they will neither be provided to married accommodation nor can they live with family outside the premises.

2. TGC (Technical Graduate Course) Entry
If you are a B.E. or B.Tech degree holder from any recognized university you can enter the armed forces in two ways. You can either choose TGC for the permanent commission (only for men) or Short Service Commission (for male and female both). TGC notification comes twice a year.
Eligibility: – A candidate must be unmarried male and age limit is 20-27 years. The candidate who have passed the engineering degree or in the final year of engineering can eligible to apply.

3. UES (University Entry Scheme)
This is a permanent commission job only for male candidates. There are two interview rounds for this entrance, the first one is held at the college campus (any college campus) and the final one is at the SSB centers. The eligibility criteria is a B.Tech degree (final and pre-final year students can also apply) from a recognized university. Candidates studying in pre-final year of the engineering courses in recognised University/Institution/colleges will be eligible to apply but must possess the educational qualification at the time of joining training or produce the proof of having obtained the educational qualification within 12 weeks from the date of commencement of training for the grant of permanent commission in the army.
Method of selection: –
a. Online applications of the candidate will be forwarded to respective commando headquarters.
b. Preliminary selection of candidates will be made by selection team of command headquarters for holding preliminary interviews at university /college.
c. Candidates are required to be undergraduate during the selection process and must be graduated at the time of commencement of the course. Qualifying candidates are forwarded to the Selection center for SSB interview.
d. Duration of SSB interviews is five days. During SSB interviews candidates put through Psychological tests, group tests and Interviews.
e. Day 1 is the psychological test and intelligent test day. The candidate who failed to qualify in day 1 they will be returned on the first day itself. Only successful candidates shall be retained for the balance of testing.
f. Candidates who qualify the five days SSB interview, they shall go through a medical test.

4. JAG (Judge Advocate General) entry
If you are a law graduate with 55% marks and registered with the Bar Council of India/state, you can apply for the JAG entry course. The candidates having studied at the college/university which is not recognized by Bar Council of India will not be accepted. The training provided at Officers Training Academy, Chennai.
Selection Procedure: –
a. The shortlisting of candidates on the based academic performance done by Recruiting Directorate.
b. shortlisted candidates will be allotted SSB centers and date of reporting will be sent to them through SMS or e-mail.
c. The candidates who report on the mentioned date will face stage 1 (screening) and stage 2 (Psychology test, GTO and Personal Interview).
d. The one who passes the stage 1 will stay for stage 2 and those who fail in stage 1 will be set free on the same day.
e. Qualifying after stage 2, candidates will undergo documentation and medical tests.

5. Special entries for NCC
For this entry, you do not need to apply for a test. This is a direct form of selection in which the candidate has to go through SSB Interview only. The candidates (male and female) must be unmarried including wards of battle casualties. Age between 19-25 years.
Educational Qualification:
A degree of a recognized university with minimum 50% marks of all the years. Those studying in final year are also allowed to apply provided that they have secured minimum 50% marks in the first two-three years of three-four years degree courses respectively. Such candidates will need to secure an overall aggregate of minimum 50% marks if selected in the interview, failing which their candidature will be cancelled.
NCC ‘C’ certificate not required forwards of battle casualties. But following documents to be attached along with the application form: –
- A battle casualty certificate issued by respective regimental records/MP dte and vetted by AG/MO-5D certifying that the parent has been killed/wounded/reported missing in action.
- A copy of MP Dte / Respective regimental records part 2 order notifying injuries and being classified as a battle casualty.
- Relation certificate issued by respective regimental records /MP Dte.
Indian Army Career after 12th: –
There are two ways to join the Indian Army:
1. NDA & NA Examination:
The NDA entry opens twice a year.
Age:The candidate’s age must be between 16.6 years to 19.6 years.
Qualification: The candidates should have passed 12th class with Physics and Math.
Training Academy: NDA, PUNE.
Training Period: 3 Yrs at NDA and then 1 yr at IMA, Dehradun.
2. TES (Technical Entry Scheme):
Age: 16.6 Yrs to 19 yrs.
Qualification: 10+2 Physics, Chemistry, and Math (aggregate 70% and above)
Training Academy: IMA, Dehradun
Training Period: 5 yrs (1 Yr IMA & 4 Yrs CTWS)
There is only one way to join Air Force
You can join NDA by taking the exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. This exam conducted twice every year.
AGE: 16.6 Yrs TO 19 Yrs.
Qualification: 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics.
There are only 2 ways to join Indian Navy after 12th
a. You can join NA by taking the exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). This exam is conducted twice a year.
Qualification: 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics.
AGE: 16.6 Yrs to 19 Yrs
b. Qualification: 10+2 or its equivalent with 70% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (PCM) and at least 50% marks in English (either in class 10 or class 12).

How to join Indian army after 10th
You can join the army just after passing class X exams. Yes, you can become a Soldier General Duty. If you have passed technical training like ITI, you can be posted as a Soldier Tradesman. If you have a good physique like height 163 cm to 170cm and chest 77cm and an average weight around 50kg, you can easily pass the Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and Physical Standard Test (PST). These tests check the stamina, strength, and fitness of the applicants.
Age – 17½ – 21 Years
Qualifications – 10th pass with 45% & each subject must contain 33%
