Disabled students take part in sports meet at PU

CHANDIGARH: Around 200 students, including differently-abled from special schools and NGOs, on Tuesday participated in a sports meet organized by the centre for human rights and duties at Panjab University on the theme ‘sankalp samaavesh ka’ (a pledge for inclusion). Various games such as relay race, three leg race, sack race, 50 meter race, 100 metre race and spoon lemon race were played by differently-abled children along with the student volunteers of the department. Prof Namita Gupta, the chairperson of the department, said the purpose of the event was to motivate differently-abled children to be part of the mainstream society.

PU vice-chancellor Prof Raj Kumar, while inaugurating the sports meet, said, “The people should provide opportunities to such children so that they become a part of the society. I assure the parents that our university would render all the help for such events organized in future as well.” The names of children with disabilities who won in various games were: Lakhvir, Omprakash, Bulbul and Jyoti in spoon and lemon race; Vickey and Akshay in 50 meters race; Bhawana, Anmol, Manpreet, Raman in 3 leg race; Abhishek Kohli, Tanveer, Tushar, Nitin, Jatin, Harman and Tejinder in men relay race; Anshika, Ranju, Hemant, Ananya, Kalpana and Purva in women relay race
